AI research lab OpenAI announced today that it is continuing its international expansion with a new office in Dublin, Ireland. This comes after the San Francisco-based AI startup opened its first European office in London earlier this summer.

The Dublin office marks OpenAI's first presence in Ireland and reflects the company's growing focus on the European market. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, the Dublin team will focus on operations, trust and safety, go-to-market initiatives, security engineering, and legal work. Altman stated that Ireland offers a talented workforce and an environment supportive of innovation and responsible business growth.

OpenAI plans to grow its Dublin team throughout 2023. The company aims to collaborate with the Irish government on their National AI Strategy and work with local industry, startups, and academia. OpenAI has already begun engaging with youth accelerator Patch to provide Irish students with AI education and mentorship.

Ireland has emerged as a hub for major technology companies due to its strong talent pool and pro-business environment. Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, welcomed OpenAI’s move, highlighting that Ireland is a "recognized hub for administrative, regulatory, and innovation activities for the world’s leading digital companies."

Dublin's choice isn't accidental; it’s strategic. Ireland has been laying the groundwork for becoming an AI powerhouse. Cities like Cork, Galway, and Limerick have seen significant growth in their tech and startup ecosystems, setting the stage for Dublin to be more than just a European outpost for OpenAI, but a collaborative partner in AI advancement.

Simon Coveney, Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, said OpenAI's Dublin office can "help build on our foundation to support emerging AI research and innovation, and ensure our workforce is well prepared."

The Dublin expansion aligns with OpenAI's mission of developing AI to benefit people worldwide. Altman stated the new European offices will help OpenAI "better understand, serve, and collaborate" with partners across the continent. This marks a milestone as the company continues its rapid growth beyond its Silicon Valley roots.
