Thomson Reuters Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plans for CoCounsel, its Professional-Grade GenAI Assistant

Thomson Reuters has announced a new vision for CoCounsel, its generative AI assistant. CoCounsel will now serve as a unified, intelligent interface across Thomson Reuters' entire portfolio, providing users with a seamless, AI-powered experience tailored to their specific industry and workflow.

According to David Wong, Thomson Reuters' Chief Product Officer, "Our unique combination of resources means we can deliver on our vision of providing professionals a new, human-centric point of access to our suite of Thomson Reuters products. As our products continue to expand and improve, the customer experience will remain centered in our GenAI assistant as CoCounsel learns new skills and capabilities - unlocking productivity and becoming the way professionals work."

Leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies like GPT-4, CoCounsel is designed to act as a knowledgeable team member, handling complex tasks and maintaining context across different products and workflows. By integrating with Thomson Reuters' trusted proprietary content and embedding itself within the tools professionals use daily, CoCounsel aims to accelerate research, streamline drafting and review processes, and ultimately enable users to produce higher-quality work more efficiently.

Brad Lightcap, COO at OpenAI, emphasized the transformative potential of this collaboration: "By powering solutions like CoCounsel, their new professional-grade AI Assistant, together we make knowledge workers more creative and productive. AI automates routine tasks and makes it possible to quickly analyze huge amounts of data – but even more importantly, it helps people come up with new ways to solve complex problems."

As part of this expanded vision, Thomson Reuters is introducing new CoCounsel skills for legal and tax professionals. Westlaw Edge UK with CoCounsel, now available to UK customers, marks the company's first generative AI legal research offering in the region. It allows users to ask complex questions in natural language and receive synthesized answers grounded in Westlaw's trusted content. Similarly, Checkpoint Edge with CoCounsel, set to launch in the US this summer, promises to deliver faster, better answers to intricate tax research questions.

CoCounsel will also integrate with popular third-party applications like Microsoft 365, bringing its AI capabilities directly into the tools professionals use every day. Beta versions of CoCounsel applications for Teams, Word, Outlook, and SharePoint are expected to be available to US and UK customers this summer.

The rollout of CoCounsel across Thomson Reuters' portfolio is underpinned by the company's robust GenAI engineering platform. This common development infrastructure allows for the creation of reusable AI components that can be rapidly deployed across products, ensuring a consistent, high-quality user experience.

As professionals navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of generative AI, Thomson Reuters is positioning itself as a trusted guide, committed to delivering reliable information and cutting-edge solutions that empower users to work more efficiently and effectively. With CoCounsel at the helm, the company is poised to redefine how professionals across industries interact with technology and unlock new levels of productivity and innovation.
