The reinstatement of Sam Altman as CEO of OpenAI has sparked a wave of reactions across the AI community, underscoring the high stakes and intense emotions involved in the saga. In a statement announcing the reappointment, OpenAI said “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return as CEO with a new initial board.” The account also reposted jubilant reactions from Altman and returning President Greg Brockman.

Brockman conveyed palpable excitement, writing “Returning to OpenAI & getting back to coding tonight.” He also thanked Microsoft executives for “their unwavering support during this trying chapter.” Microsoft’s $10 billion investment made it a key player in the drama, initially pledging to hire Altman and any defecting staff before tensions were resolved.

Ilya Sutskever, whose initial vote was pivotal in the earlier decision to oust Altman, demonstrated a change of heart by reposting messages from key figures, including Sam Altman and Mira Murati, indicating his support for the resolution.

Helen Toner, one of the independent board members that ousted Altman seemed to express relief that it was all over.

The reversal came after escalating pressure from employees and backers threatened OpenAI’s very future if the board refused to reverse course. A staggering 747 out of 770 employees threatened to leave for Microsoft, catalyzing the board's decision to reconsider their stance. This unprecedented move underscored the deep respect and loyalty Altman commands and the employees' commitment to OpenAI's vision.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella who played a key role in negotiations called the leadership changes “an essential first step” and reaffirmed commitment to their vital partnership.

Interim CEO Emmett Shear called the result “deeply pleasing” after intense negotiations.

The collective sigh of relief and renewed focus within OpenAI is palpable.
